Sofar Ocean's superior weather forecasts minimize voyage costs.
The efficiency of a vessel's voyage depends on the type of ocean weather it encounters. Waves, wind, and currents create resistance that a ship must overcome by consuming more fuel. This reduction in efficiency results in increased costs. Among these factors, waves are the primary source of added weather resistance, leading to undesirable vessel motion, such as pitching and rolling.
Maritime shipping companies are increasingly adopting voyage optimization platforms to mitigate the impact of weather on a vessel's fuel consumption and emissions. Nonetheless, many of these platforms still rely on traditional weather forecasts based on satellite observations. However, a recent analysis published by NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office indicates that direct observations from drifting buoys have a more significant impact than satellite observations.
